Sweet Orange essential oil is delicious. Even as I sit here writing about it, I can't put it down. It's addictive. Light, sweet, full, fruity, fresh and rich and up-lifting. You open it and you just can't close it. It is literally like sunshine in a bottle.
It is made by cold pressing the skin of the orange. It's literally that bit of zest that stings you in the eye when you peal a really good orange - not to be confused with the juice. It's main chemical make up is Terpene, which is highly anti-bacterial and greatly boosts the immune system.
More that just a pretty oil, Sweet Orange essential oil is full of benefits. It's more than just your one-a-day. Over the years it has been used within the domestic, industrial, and medicinal world. It is often added to cleaning products, air fresheners and as a flavouring to beverages, desserts, biscuits and sweetmeats. It is used massively in the beauty industry. From soaps and lotions, to anti-aging and wrinkle-lifting products. The list goes on.
But how do I use it at home if everything has already been done with it for me to buy?
There are different grades of essential oils, something we'll come back to. A lot of oils used in mass industrial made products are of a lower grade. What you buy when you purchase a 10ml bottle of essential oil is a 100% pure, therapeutic grade oil that works on a number of levels. So when you get creative with your Sweet Orange, your doing more than just making the room smell nice or cleaning your work top.
Stress and inflammation are enemies. Not of each other. Sometimes they work well together, but they don't work well with the mind and body. Some artificial sedatives damage the heart and various internal organs in the long run. A natural sedative such as Sweet Orange helps you relax. It reduces anxiety, anger, depression, blood pressure and certain physical inflammations. Including muscle spasms.
Skin loves Sweet Orange. It is a great tonic for dull, oily skin. It refreshes and detoxifies it, keeping it healthy and smooth. It is great for acne and dermatitis. It's one of the reasons we add it to our handmade Citrus Soap. More to come on that.
Just as a word of caution, depending on how it is made, Sweet Orange essential oil can be photo-toxic. Always dilute the oil with a carrier oil such as grape seed oil for safe topical application, and never apply just before you head out into the sunshine or onto a sun bed. If you feel unsure about using Sweet Orange oil on your skin, contact an aromatherapist.
Give bugs a run for their money!
An anti-viral oil, Sweet Orange cleans the air when you burn it in an oil burner. Perfect for this time of the year when colds, flus and throat infections are making their way around schools and work places. It boosts the immune system - helping fight against infection. It will also help you avoid septic fungal infections as a disinfect for wounds. It's a great tonic for almost every system in the body.
Try the recipe below. A refreshing, non-toxic, anti bacterial cleaning spray that can be used to wipe down your work surfaces, while uplifting you and cleaning the air. Why use synthetic!

Sweet Orange is also a fine digestive. It cams the stomach and moves gas. It also helps relieve issues such as diarrhoea and constipation. It encourages urination, which eliminates toxins and excess water.
It's a fantastic oil to have at home. Blend it with Lemon, Lavender True or Frankincense to create an aroma you love to come home to and increase it benefits.
